Orders are booked through the end of 2027! The “powerhouse” is experiencing a global surge in demand!

Currently, global AI computing power infrastructure is entering an explosive growth phase, where high-power, high-stability power supply has become the “lifeline” for computing clusters.

Currently, global AI computing power infrastructure is entering an explosive growth phase, where high-power, high-stability power supply has become the “lifeline” for computing clusters. Power equipment transformers are being upgraded to serve as the core of computing infrastructure. During field research in Guangdong, Jiangsu, and other regions of China, reporters discovered that a large number of transformer factories are already operating at full capacity, with some orders for data center projects extending as far as 2027.

The explosive growth of global AI computing centers has made transformers a scarce resource, with delivery cycles in the U.S. market extending from 50 weeks to 127 weeks.  At an electrical equipment company in Foshan, the factory's core product—dry-type transformers—is primarily used in scenarios such as data centers, and export orders have also seen rapid growth.

Li Xia, Marketing Manager of an Electrical Equipment Company in Foshan, Guangdong:  Compared to delivery cycles in Europe and the United States, ours are less than one-fifth as long. With orders currently robust, we aim to increase the proportion of overseas revenue to 50% or higher.

Full production capacity is also evident in the Yangtze River Delta region. At a transformer factory in Jiangsu, product orders are already booked through the end of 2027. Among these, China's first fully insulated ultra-high-voltage, large-capacity transformer was recently shipped to the North American market.

Data indicates that China's transformer industry comprises approximately 3,000 enterprises. In 2025, China's total transformer exports reached 64.6 billion yuan, marking an increase of nearly 36% compared to 2024.

Cai Yiqing, Secretary-General of the Power Equipment Branch of the China Electricity Council: China has become the world's largest transformer producer, We have established the world's most comprehensive transformer production system, possessing the hard power of full industrial chain autonomy and control, with production capacity accounting for approximately 60% of the global total.

China's Computing Power Consumption Surges

The “Power Heart” Bears a Heavy Burden

Behind the surge in transformer orders lies a substantial increase in computing power electricity consumption. Currently, China's computing centers and supercomputing clusters are accelerating their development across the board. Coupled with the deepening advancement of the “East Data, West Computing” initiative, transformers—as the “power heart”—bear a heavy responsibility.

Construction has recently commenced on the Fengtai 500-kilovolt transmission and transformation project in Beijing's Lizhi Financial Business District. The project will significantly enhance the power supply capacity of Beijing's southern grid. Equipped with two large-capacity transformers, it will provide electricity to high-tech industries such as China Data Street upon completion.

At the Wuhu Computing Center in Anhui, a national computing hub node, the 220-kilovolt Gaocun transmission and transformation project has recently been completed and put into operation. The project deployed two domestically manufactured transformers, enhancing the power supply reliability of the computing center. To date, the computing center in Wuhu has commissioned eight user substations equipped with a total of 24 transformers.

In Guangdong, the province's data center electricity consumption grew by nearly 30% year-on-year in 2025, with Shaoguan's computing power cluster recording electricity consumption growth exceeding 50% for several consecutive months.

As the “East Data, West Computing” initiative advances, computing power parks are rapidly emerging across multiple regions nationwide. By 2025, China's transformer market is projected to grow by over 20% year-on-year, with orders for high-end products related to AI computing power and ultra-high voltage exceeding 35% of total demand. These segments have become the core drivers of industry growth.

China's Transformers Accelerate Technology Iteration

Seizing the Global Computing Power Market

AI supercomputing clusters demand exceptionally high power supply quality. Leveraging core technological strengths, China's transformer industry is developing targeted solutions such as solid-state transformers and high-frequency transformers to accommodate renewable energy integration and seize opportunities in the global computing power market.

The convergence of global AI computing power infrastructure development, energy transition, and power grid upgrade demands has propelled transformers into hard currency.  Domestic transformers are also accelerating technological iteration to adapt to new demands.

To address the challenges posed by high-penetration integration of renewable energy, Hebei Province is exploring the application of all-silicon carbide power electronic transformer technology. This approach utilizes high-voltage silicon carbide devices to reduce electrical energy losses and enhance the utilization efficiency of renewable energy.

From the upstream smelting of copper and silicon steel, to the processing of transformer-grade electromagnetic wire, core manufacturing, and insulation paperboard production,China has established the world's most comprehensive and efficient transformer industry chain.

Ma Yong, Deputy Director of the Transmission and Transformation Technology Research Institute, State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Research Institute: China's transformer technology holds a leading position globally. Chinese enterprises continue to advance technological innovation, developing and applying various new types of transformers such as high-frequency transformers and phase-shifting transformers, driving the industry toward greater intelligence, lower losses, and miniaturization.
