The shaft seal heater (also known as the shaft seal cooler) is a core auxiliary device in the thermal system of a steam turbine.

Shaft Seal Heater

Description

The gland steam heater serves as a critical auxiliary component in steam turbine thermal systems. Its primary function is to recover thermal energy and working fluid from turbine gland steam leakage, while simultaneously condensing the steam content within the leaked flow and discharging non-condensable gases (such as air). This process prevents air ingress into the condenser, thereby preserving vacuum integrity and minimizing thermal losses and working fluid wastage in the thermodynamic cycle. Its performance directly impacts the turbine's vacuum stability, operational economy, and gland system sealing effectiveness, making it essential for ensuring safe and efficient unit operation.

1. Design Parameters:

1) Thermal Performance (Key Parameters): Heat transfer area, heat transfer coefficient, leakage steam condensation rate, condensate temperature rise.

2) Fluid Parameters: Gland steam leakage flow rate, condensate flow rate, steam-side pressure.

3) Construction Materials: Heat exchanger tube materials (copper alloy tubes, stainless steel tubes 304/316/316L).

2. Common Faults:

1) Decreased heat transfer efficiency, resulting in inadequate steam condensation and insufficient condensate temperature rise.

2) Corrosion and leakage in water-side tube bundles.

3) Corrosion and leakage on the steam side.

4) Condenser vacuum degradation caused by excessive turbine gland clearance (due to prolonged wear) and/or excessively high gland sealing steam pressure. This leads to leakage flow exceeding the heater's design capacity, allowing surplus steam to bypass directly into the condenser.
