Product Introduction: Turbine Gland Sleeve
The turbine gland sleeve, in conjunction with the stationary gland housing, forms the essential sealing system of the turbine.
1. Primary Functions:
The rotating gland sleeve interfaces with the stationary gland rings, creating a series of precisely machined, minimal radial clearances. These form a labyrinth seal path, effectively restricting steam leakage along the rotor shaft.
It acts as a protective, replaceable sacrificial component for the rotor body. Damage or wear is confined to the sleeve, preserving the integrity of the more valuable and complex rotor shaft.
It accommodates thermal expansion in unison with the rotor, maintaining concentricity and ensuring the stability of the critical sealing clearances under all operating conditions.
2. Structural Design & Features:
● Primary Material: Typically manufactured from high-grade stainless steel, selected for its excellent combination of high strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
● Material Requirements: The material must possess sufficient mechanical strength, superior wear resistance, and a thermal expansion coefficient closely matched to that of the rotor shaft to ensure consistent performance.
● Mounting Method: Employing a monolithic design, the sleeve is installed on the rotor journal using a thermal shrink-fit (hot shrinking or "red fit") process. This creates a secure, interference-fit connection that remains reliable at operating speeds.
● Maintenance Advantage: Designed for ease of repair and replacement. Worn sleeves can be economically refurbished by re-grooving and inserting new seal strips, or replaced entirely as a unit. This offers a significantly lower-cost alternative compared to repairing or replacing the rotor shaft itself.
3. Application: Widely used in steam turbines, gas turbines, and centrifugal compressors.
4. Common Failure Modes:
● Wear on the Sleeve Outer Diameter: Caused by rubbing contact with stationary components due to rotor vibration or misalignment.
● Axial Deformation or Collapse of the Sleeve: Resulting from excessive axial thrust loads or improper assembly.
● Damage to Seal Strips/Fins: Caused by foreign object ingestion (FOI), where debris in the steam/ gas flow cuts or erodes the delicate seal fins.
● Fatigue Cracking of the Sleeve: Induced by frequent thermal cycling (repeated start-ups and shutdowns), which subjects the material to alternating thermal stress and centrifugal force variations, leading to material fatigue and crack initiation.
